Biblical Counseling Philosophy
Written by Warren Sprouse
The word "counsel" is not a good word to apply to what God has equipped certain believers to do. The Lord Jesus Christ is The Counselor. We are facilitators. We function more in the role of consultant than as counselor. It is not our responsibility to effect change in another person's life. We are merely here to point the way, should anyone care to go.
The problem is that the world has elevated the "counsel" in such a way that to use any other term, at least initially, is to confuse and turn people away from the king of help they really need. So, we use "counsel" when we mean consult and trust those who understand the difference are gracious enough to allow that freedom.
Before You Call a Therapist
Written by Warren Sprouse
Think about it. If a person lives in a stressful environment: music, computer games, instant messaging, cell phones, text messaging, fast-paced sights and sounds all around, an energy-filled social dynamic, due in part to both parents working and consequently not having the time to do everything that needs to be done....
Add to that a poor diet, lack of exercise, the inability to connect with their busy parents or succeed at school, or feel like anyone knows who they are or what's really going on in their life...
A broken family, an alternative family and lifestyle, exposure to alcohol, drugs, and pornography – in the home! Hateful words, vulgar words, angry energy all day, every day....
What “therapy” is going to fix that?
The Sufficiency of Scripture
Written by Warren Sprouse
The apostle Peter says, "Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and Jesus Christ our Lord, according as his divine power half given unto us ALL things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that called us to glory and virtue." (II Peter 1:3)
Do you believe that we have ALL we need for life and godliness to the knowledge of God and Christ? The Greek word knowledge used here is the one meeting a full and exact knowledge. It is not mental apprehension. Satan has that. It is an intimate relationship whereby we know Him and relate to Him as He is. If you do not accept this as truth you will not be able to help yourself, let alone others.
